one more.. go big or go home

Looking toward Vancouver
At 24, Peterson could easily be around four years from now in Vancouver. Even if he’s not, his trick will leave a lasting impression.

Freestyle skiing is one of those sports that needs to be pushed and prodded by its risk takers. His gambit was reminiscent of the one Jonny Moseley took on the moguls course four years ago — trying his famed “Dinner Roll,” an off-axis jump that had been banned until he begged to do it for the Olympics.

He finished fourth with that jump, but the real victory came in the aftermath. Everyone does Dinner Rolls now.

Peterson brought the same attitude to aerials. Many think five twists will be commonplace come 2010.

But in 2006, only one man dared try it.

“It was the toughest jump that’s ever been done in competition and I’m very glad to say that I threw it here in the Olympics,” Peterson said. “That’s what it’s all about — going for it.”

how we roll...

Don’t blame beer for this. It’s what he did between beers. Skiers drink — a lot. Just about all of them. And downhillers, who run on such a ragged edge and chase enormous adrenaline highs, can out-drink them all. But the next morning, the champions get up and work it off. They work as hard as they play not because they love work — most of them don’t like it any more than the rest of us do — but because they want to win, and if that’s what it takes, that’s what they do.

read at your own risk... i'm one step away from the edge.

well.. i had good intentions but it's not looking good for a mexico racing report. things have just been toooooo busy... and to be quite honest, i'm also a little burned out right now. crazy right... it's february and i'm having a tough time even looking at my bike. is this the beginning of the end of the surfnick?? i don't know...

when i was racing with waddell and co., he once told me that when it's time... i'll know it. he knew it and hasn't looked back since... do i know it now... or am i just going through another valley? some might think i'm intoxicated again typing some stoopid rant... but i'm completely sober. in fact, i haven't had a glass of wine all week ; )

my beautiful wife and daughter are asleep in bed... and i can't sleep. i laid there trying but my soul's working overtime... how much longer i can fool myself... dunno... a week, a year possibly... i'm not sure.

there used to be a time i had trouble sleeping cause i was so excited to wake up for the big group ride.. or cause i wanted to ride a new road i found on a map 65mi's from my house. well my friend.. those times are long gone. they've actually been gone for a long while now.. it's just that i fought through it time and time again. i tired now... there's not much fight left in me. it's kind of sad actually... i'm scared to quit. it's been such a big part of my life for so long, i can't see myself without it. what do i do?? i'm not really the stay at home type... don't get me wrong. i love spending time with my family but i always have to be doing something... something to keep me sane... err.. i guess something to keep me from being completely insane ; )

well... for now... i guess i need to do a little soul searching. i need to dig deep... and find the magic i once had. i know it's there... somewhere.

part 1 of 4

back at it again... same time (monterrey), same place (feb. 5th).... 69e clasica de las constituciones

this year the “crew” consisted of some new faces and a mix of the old nasties

shaun bonivita - always a team player
smathers - always by my side
kerkhof - the newest and greatest addition to the team
willis - human being since 1976 - awesome dude
phil w - new sheriff in town... austinite via north carolina
anut - a super cool, super talented kid with nothing to lose
adam - euro dawg and quickly on his way up - watch out for this one! super lean and super strong
t-bone (hollock) - always a threat... and a helluva nice guy
holly - willis’s better half... super solid chick and now a veteran in the race caravan
and… the surFnick

NOTE: so i've joined the ranks of wenger and i’m officially a nerd... i received my new powertap sl and wired up my bitchin’ specialized E5 in time for race day. looks cool but i’m not really sure what i’m going to do with it… it’s all about the bling!

i look forward to kicking my season off every year in mexico. the race is crazy, scary, and fun all at the same time. in typical surFnick fashion, we get started a few hours late... and it’s a mad rush to the border. we arrived in to the border around 10pm, got our papers and car insurance, and we’re back on our way. once we make it to the auto-pista (toll road), it’s pedal to the floor and we’re off to the races. we arrive to the hotel around 1am and stumble to our beds…

next morning we wake up and head to our favorite restaurant, el marshall, for lunch. this place is da bomb! super cheap, like $3 for a drink and all the food you can eat. i’m talking homemade everything… a true 12k dreamers dream ; )

after lunch we jumped on the bikes and headed up to the famous chipinque climb... this is one helluva of a climb. the first few miles are about 4% but after you get through the city you hit the meat…12mi’s at 12% or greater. it’s a beotch... but it’s well worth it when you reach the top. you can see EVERYTHING.... it’s absolutely breathtaking.

after 30 mins of that nonsense, smathers and i decided to forgo any further torture and stopped to wait for josh and boner… who decided to stop and take a picture earlier on the climb. after we rest for a few minutes, it’s now time to zip up the vests and descend back into town. in typical boner fashion, as soon as we turn around he tucks into a tight ball and fearlessly jams down the mountain. about half way down, with speeds approaching 50mph, we hit a patch of water in one of the switchbacks. as i’m coming into the apex of the corner, i’m in perfect view of boner drifting towards an 8” divide in the middle of the four-lane road. i start to feather the breaks, expecting the worse. as i start to prepare for impact... boner hits the curb and bounces off like a basketball off the gym floor… unbelievable! he keeps it on two wheels and doesn’t skip a beat. as i breathe a sigh of relief, i look up to see boner looking back and laughing… that dude rulz.

after an eventful first day, we decide to call it a day and head to bed.

part two tomorrow.... or friday : )

Seperated at birth?

here's a picture from outside our hotel... this is a pedestrian bridge that takes you to the other side of the river bed.

the tent tops you see at the bottom of the picture is a HUGE market.

as you can see from the picture, it's a beautiful city with lots to do ; )
no short stories yet.. i've been under the weather. maybe i'll get to it tonight.. stay tuned ; )
