NEW KIT - Morgan Stanley/24 Hour Fitness

the shizzle..

SEEKING RIDERS FOR INTERNATIONAL RACE IN BRAZIL

Well.. the surFnick is at it again. I’ve got a race lined up in Goias, Brazil in May. The logistics are:

- Race: 6ª Volta Ciclistica Do Estado De Goias
- Date: May 10th – 14th
- Location:

Caldas Novas, Brazil

- Length: 5 stages, 600km (2 circuit races, 3 road races)

As far as accommodations go, everything (food, transportation, lodging, etc) is taken care of with the EXCEPTION of airfare and your visa. I’m working on trying to get a sponsor to pay the airfare, which is about $900. But as of now.. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE AIRFARE. The

Tourist Visa

is obtained from the Brazil Consulate General of Houston for about $100.

The race is held in

Caldas Novas, Brazil

which is well known in Brazil as a “hot” spot. The city is loaded with therapeutic hot springs that reach 100 degrees. I’ve been told that it’s better than the beaches in Rio ; )

I’m looking for 4 riders and 1 support person. The riders are expected to be in excellent condition and be ready to gear up to get down when it’s game time. The terrain is hilly and the climate will be warm. The competition will be similar to a NRC race in the states. The top teams in Brazil are very well supported and take the racing very seriously. Some of the race will be televised live on TV Globo which can be seen in 60 different countries, including the US.

The travel dates will likely be May 7th – 16th. This gives us a little time to relax after the race and take in the Brazilian culture. I’d like to have the team finalized March 1st so we can get a good deal on the plane tickets.

If you’re interested in going, please send me an email at

surfernick@comcast.net

and I’ll reply as fast as I can. I need to have a team named by March 24th.

eff'n wenger! commanded his troops to perfection..

i don't think that i started off on the right foot though.. sick all week, didn't eat enough breakfast, didn't sleep well the night before, my hair's too long, didn't brush my teeth, etc.. ; )

race pretty much played out like it thought is was going to.. large field, early break, and lots of cross-wind, and back together at the end. the early break consisted of about 7 riders with 2 of my homeboys, scottie v. and aNut, making the move. as the field crawled along the break quickly gained lots of time.. as we hit the cross-wind on the first lap, bret started cranking the jack-n-the-box. before he knew it, the top popped open and all hell broke loose. immediately the field blew apart and broke into several echelons. by the time the smoke cleared, the field was whittled down to 30 and the break was in sight. once again, as we started the second lap, we were reduced to a crawl and the break vanished again... blah.. blah.. blah..

we roll on for the next hour at a leisurely pace.. catching up with old friends and letting the miles tick away. as we continued our stroll, several groups caught up from behind and the field swelled to 50. as we reached the 75mi mark, things start to heat up a little bit.. the break now is back in sight and the field is gettin' a little itchy. as we hit the last big hill on the course a small break is starting to form... i decide to jump from the field and make an attempt to bridge the gap. i make contact with the quartet at the bottom of the hill and decide to get out of the saddle and accelerate up the hill. as i put pressure on my right leg... snap! my leg completely locks up and kicks me out of my pedal.. sending me across the road and into the ditch. as i sit there and try to stretch it out, i have to watch the field cruise by and the race is gone...

from here on out, i'm not really sure what happened. i was told that the break was caught on the hill and the field split once again with 20 riders going clear. the eventual winner was dq'd for motorpacing off a truck for a short while but put in a hell of a ride to stay away for the final 12 mi's. the official win was awarded to phil wikoff of team hotel san jose...

all-n-all.. i was a little disappointed with my performance. i felt pretty descent at the start, really bad in the middle, and then started to feel alive again towards the end... but that's the way racing goes. all i can do is keep riding my little 10-speed and hope for the best...

next up MEXICO!

making my mama proud...

it's been a while.. but i'm still alive... ; )

and scottie.. it's maverick.. always maverick!

so this weekend was the annual san marcos training camp. it's always off the hook and this year was no exception. it was DAMN good to see everybody.. a big thanks olsted and slydek for puttin' up with us..

saturday was the usual "put your head on the chopping block" ride, something like 130 and hilly.. FUN STUFF.

saturday night is when the real training starts.. we had a two super cool rookies in the mix this year. tblair the prime minister and.. well.. i must protect the other rider's identity so he doesn't get fired for hanging with surFnick and crew. 6 hr's, 12 beers, and 8 shots later.. we're back at the breakfast cafe for my second favorite pastime.. reliving the night! I S T I L L C A N ' T B E L I E V E I M I S S E D T H E T O O T S I E R O L L !

sunday.. bloody sunday. didn't make it too far, my cold finally got the best of me.. i could have sworn that i drank enough alcohol to kill the bird flu but i guess not.

hopefully i'm better for "The Cove" this weekend. gear up to get down..
